Being a Guadalupano / Ser Guadalupano

Being a Guadalupano
In the hymn, La Guadalupana, we sing, ‘to be a guadalupano is essential’. It is part of the identity of the Mexican, but it is also the identity of being Catholic. In some areas of the United States, you will encounter a image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the door of Hispanic homes. It will say, “Este hogar es católico”, (This home is Catholic) It is to advise the Jehovah Witness of Evangelical missionary to respect the Catholic faith of the people in the home. At one home, I saw the image with a more menacing statement. (If you are not a friend of Mary, you are not a friend of mine.)
Juan Diego was the first Guadalupano. We seek a deeper relationship with God by following his example. We discover his example in the Nican Mopohua, the original testament to the apparations of Our Lady of Guadalupe. After experiencing the apparitions and presenting the proof of the Virgin to Bishop Zumárraga, Juan Diego told and retold the story in Aztec tradition.
The message was filled with hope, healing and promise. His message came to people who were recently conquered. Many died from the plague. The indigenous people lost their lands and power. Most profoundly they lost a since of pride, hope and joy. The Catholic faith developed rapidly in Mexico, and the story of Guadalupe has been called the gospel of Mexico.
Today we need Guadalupanos living with dignity, hope, compassion, and joy. There is too much bad news around us. The bad news is political, environmental, health crises, international unrest, depression affecting many and even deep divisions within the Church. We need Guadalupanos who believe in the Gospel, love generously, forgive freely and witness the faith in their lives.
Lord, create in us a Guadalupano heart.
