Celebrando la Virgen y la Navidad

Estoy reflexionando estos días sobre el efecto de COVID en el ministerio. Hoy, me siento un perdido en cómo servir a la gente que se encuentra al margen de la iglesia y la sociedad y cómo servir de manera segura para los demás y para mí.
He sido Redentorista durante cincuenta y dos años y sacerdote durante cuarenta y siete años. Gran parte de mi vida he participado en la vida sacramental de la iglesia y en el ministerio con personas a menudo fuera de las estructuras ordinarias del ministerio de la iglesia. He trabajado muchos años en pastoral juvenil, alcoholismo y adicciones, predicando misiones parroquiales y acompañando a familias migrantes e inmigrantes.
Me encanta esta temporada del año. Celebramos el Día de Acción de Gracias y luego las tradiciones de Adviento, la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Posadas y la Navidad. Maravillosas tradiciones y comida, excepto en este año, todo está bajo la nube de COVID. Las celebraciones populares de las fiestas de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, las Posadas y la Navidad me han dado un gran aprecio por la fe en la vida de muchas personas que quizás no se sientan como en casa en nuestras parroquias. Era común en el la Delta de Mississippi, donde trabajé durante los últimos cinco años, que grupos de familias y amigos comenzando 46 días antes de la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe se reunieran en diferentes hogares para rezar el rosario. Los 46 días representan las estrellas en la imagen de la Virgen. Después del rosario, comimos pan dulce y champurrado o chocolate caliente. En algunas casas tomamos pozole o tamales. Si bien la mayoría de la gente no asistía a estas celebraciones todos los días, el rosario se celebraba en algún lugar todas las noches.
Por supuesto, tuvimos grandes celebraciones de novenas y/o triduos para la Fiesta en la mayoría de las parroquias. El 12 de diciembre fue un día en el que cada uno de los sacerdotes celebró varias misas por la vigilia, por las mañanitas y en la noche. Luego, cuatro días después, comenzamos las Posadas. Celebramos en diferentes hogares cada noche. Caminamos con José y María de camino a Belén. Una vez en un hogar que nos acogió, rezamos el rosario y más comida y, a menudo, una piñata para los niños. En realidad, la Navidad tuvo menos énfasis. Por otros momentos de devoción popular, celebramos la llegada de los reyes magos y la presentación de Jesús que marcaron el final de nuestras celebraciones del Nacimiento de Jesús.
Lamentablemente, este año, desalentamos las reuniones de personas en esta época de COVID19. Estoy trabajando ahora en la Diócesis de Jefferson City, MO. El director del Ministerio Hispano, el Diácono Enrique Castro y yo estamos preparando un Retiro Virtual previo al Adviento para ayudar a nuestras comunidades a celebrar las fiestas de Guadalupe, Posadas y la Natividad. Ofreceremos el retiro “Prepara el camino del Señor” en Youtube, del 23 al 25 de noviembre en español y del 30 de noviembre al 2 de diciembre en inglés. Publicaré el volante y el sitio web del evento cuando esté listo.
Que Dios bendiga a todos que celebran creativamente esta maravilloso tiempo del año. Me encantaría conocer las formas en que están desarrollando para celebrar en sus familias y hogares.

Celebrating Thanksgiving and Advent

I am reflecting these days on COVID’s effect on ministry with migrants. Today, I am feeling a bit lost as to how to serve people on the margins of church and society and serve safely for others and for myself.
I have been a Redemptorist for fifty-two years, and a priest for forty-seven years. Much of my life, I have participated in the sacramental life of the church and in ministry with people often outside the ordinary structures of church ministry. I have worked many years in youth ministry, alcoholism and addiction ministry, preaching parish missions and accompanying migrant and immigrant families.
This is my favorite time of the year. We celebrate Thanksgiving and then the traditions of Advent, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Posadas and Christmas. Wonderful traditions and food, except this year, all is under the cloud of COVID. The popular celebrations of Hispanic Catholicism around the feasts of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Posadas and Christmas have given me a great appreciation of faith in the lives of many people who may not feel at home in our parishes. It was common in the Delta of Mississippi, where I worked for the last five years, that clusters of families and friends beginning 46 days before the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe gathered in different homes to pray the rosary. The 46 days represent the stars on the image of the Virgin. After the rosary, we had pan dulce (pastries) and champurrado or hot chocolate. At some homes we had pozole or tamales. While most people did not attend these celebrations every day, the rosary was celebrated somewhere every evening.
Of course, we had great celebrations of novenas and/or triduums for the Feast at most of the parishes in the area. Dec. 12 was a day that each of us priests celebrated several Masses on the vigil, early in the morning and in the evening. Then four days later, we began the novena preparing for Christmas, the Posadas. We celebrate in different homes each evening. We walk with Joseph and Mary on the way to Bethlehem. Once in a home that welcomed us, we prayed the rosary, and more food and often a piñata for the children. Christmas actually had less emphasis. Other moments of popular devotion celebrated the arrival of the Maji and the Presentation of Jesus that marked the end of our celebrations of the Birth of Jesus.
Sadly, this year, we discourage gatherings of people in this time of COVID19. I am working at this time in the Diocese of Jefferson City, MO. The director for Hispanic Ministry, Deacon Enrique Castro and I are preparing a pre-Advent Virtual Retreat to help our communities celebrate the feasts of Guadalupe, Posadas and the Nativity. We will offer the retreat “Prepare the way of the Lord” on Youtube, November 23-25 in Spanish and Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in English. I will post the flyer and the website for the event when it is ready.

Today, I read how a migrant worker in Canada won a case brought to the Labour Board because his employer failed to offer adequate protection in the midst of this pandemic.

Good for the CBC reporter who put the time and effort into this article to help raise the public’s awareness of issues faced by migrant workers both in the US and in Canada.
More needs to be done to make Canadians and Americans aware of the abuse of hundreds of migrant workers, of poor working conditions, low pay, fear, stress and abuse at the hands of their employers.
The story should encourage workers, too, to speak out about their conditions and for the rest of us to support their cause.
You deserve recognition and congratulations for your work on this website.
