Dejar que los pobres transformen nuestras vidas
Los Redentoristas decimos que somos llamados para “evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”. Cuando iniciamos Casa San Alfonso en 1991, estábamos preparados para evangelizar a otros, pero sabíamos que nuestra casa era un experimento para permitir que los jóvenes nos evangelizaran. P. Patricio y yo aprendimos el uno del otro, pero sobre todo aprendimos de los jóvenes. Si bien llamábamos a los jóvenes a ser responsables, los jóvenes a menudo nos desafiaban a que les permitiéramos participar en el liderazgo de nuestra casa. Había tres jóvenes que se mudaron a Casa San Alfonso en la primera semana. Después de tres días, nos pidieron tener una reunión con ellos y algunos líderes juveniles para establecer reglas para la casa de jóvenes. Designamos a uno de los jóvenes dirigir la reunión.
Jóvenes y Redentoristas formaron la comunidad de Casa San Alfonso. El liderazgo fue compartido por los Redentoristas y los jóvenes. No era un camino fácil. La señal del éxito de la Casa fue que los jóvenes siguieron llegando. Nuestra comida era sencilla y sana. Muchos de nuestros jóvenes regresaron a la escuela, trabajaron en su GED o se inscribieron en escuelas de capacitación en construcción y otros trabajos. Treinta años después, muchos nos agradecen lo que hicimos por ellos. Creo que ellos no saben de la profunda transformación que pasó en nuestras vidas.
No solo aprendí español, sino que adquirí la cultura y la devoción de la comunidad. Después de la experiencia de vivir con jóvenes migrantes, gané la confianza para predicar misiones bilingües parroquiales y crear programas de educación religiosa para trabajadores agrícolas migrantes en Oregon. Mi vida en el ministerio me ha llamado a moverme con frecuencia y a responder a personas en muchos entornos diferentes.
Me han dicho: “Padre, su sangre es americana, pero su corazón es mexicano”. Entré al ministerio migrante para servir a los demás, pero realmente mi vida está siendo transformada constantemente por la fe y el testimonio de los pobres.
Letting the poor transform our lives
We Redemptorists say that we are called “to evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.” When we initiated Casa San Alfonso in 1991, we were prepared to evangelize others, but we knew that our house was an experiment in letting young people evangelize us. Fr. Patrick and I learned from each other, but most of all we learned from the young people. While we called young people to be responsible, the youth often challenged us to let them participate in leadership of our house. We had three young men move into Casa San Alfonso. After three days, they asked us to have a meeting with them and a few youth leaders to establish rules for the youth house. We designated one of our new residents to lead the meeting.
Young people and Redemptorists formed the community of Casa San Alfonso. Leadership was shared by Redemptorists and the youth. It was not always an easy path. The sign of success was that young people kept coming. Our food was simple and healthy. Many of our young people went back to school, or worked on their GED, or enrolled in trade schools and training programs. Thirty years later, many thank us for what we did for them. I believe that they do not realize the transformation they gave us in our lives.
I not only learned Spanish, but I took on the culture and the devotions of the community. After the experience of living with young migrants, I gained the confidence to preach parish bilingual missions and to create summer migrant religious education programs for migrant farm workers in Oregon. My life in ministry has called on me to move frequently and to respond to people in many different environments.
I have been told, “Padre, your blood is American, but your heart is Mexican.” I entered migrant ministry to serve others, but truly my life is constantly being transformed by the faith and witness of the poor.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this, like you wrote
the book in it or something. I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home a bit,
but instead of that, this is excellent blog. A great read.
I will definitely be back.
